The Duchess of Cambridge Names Royal Princess

Princess Cruises, Royal princess Naming Ceromony,13.06.2013

In a spectacular ceremony in Southampton this week, Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge named the new ship Royal Princess when she released a bottle of champagne that smashed against its hull.

Standing on the naming platform with the ship’s Captain Tony Draper, The Duchess pronounced, “I name this ship Royal Princess. May God bless her and all who sail in her.”  She then cut the rope that sent a giant Nebuchadnezzar-size bottle of Moët & Chandon champagne toward the ship, officially welcoming Royal Princess into the fleet of Princess Cruises, one of the world’s largest international cruise lines.

“We can think of no more fitting godmother for our magnificent new Royal Princess,” Princess Cruises President and CEO Alan Buckelew said.

“Her Royal Highness is an inspiring ambassador for Britain – with whom Princess Cruises shares strong ties – and she is admired around the world for her style and grace. We’re so honoured she accepted our invitation to become godmother to our new ship.”

Princess Cruises Royal Princess. Southampton England,The ceremony included star-studded entertainment that blended maritime tradition with contemporary elements, reflecting the innovative spirit of Princess’s newest class of ship. In addition to the exciting bottle break moment, the quayside festivities included a host of musical performances, including British pop singer Natasha Bedingfield singing her hit “Unwritten”, as well as an original song by British actress and “the first lady of London’s West End,” Kerry Ellis.

Internationally renowned percussive orchestra Mass Ensemble performed with its signature “Earth Harp,” an architectural instrument with strings that extended more than 300 metres and was played as it hovered over the nearly 2000 ceremony guests.

The Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Portsmouth and The Pipe Band of 1st Battalion Irish Guards opened the event with the pomp and ceremony of British ship-naming traditions. The Right Reverend Tim Dakin, Bishop of Winchester, conducted the traditional ship’s blessing.

The event capped off a week of festivities to launch the ship, including a special gala evening. Among the guests invited to the Royal Princess naming celebrations were representatives from the charities East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, SkillForce and WellChild, whose Patrons are The Duchess of Cambridge, The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Harry respectively.

The naming of a ship is a tradition thousands of years old. Different peoples and cultures have shaped the ceremonies surrounding a ship launching but the theme has always been similar – the ritual marks the birth of a vessel, and asks for a blessing of good fortune and safety for the ship and its passengers and crew.  Perhaps the most important element of the naming tradition is the godmother selected to christen a ship. In the mid-19th century it became customary for a woman of distinction to be selected for this honour. A godmother is the symbolic patron, or sponsor, of the ship through its entire life and symbolises the spirit of the vessel

Princess Cruises has a history of illustrious godmothers for past ships, including Diana Princess of Wales (who named the first Royal Princess in 1984), Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, Dame Margaret Thatcher and Olivia de Havilland. The Duchess of Cambridge now takes her place among this inspiring group of women.

The 3600-passenger Royal Princess is a new-generation ship. Among the special features found on board is a dramatic multi-storey atrium serving as the social hub of the ship offering a host of dining and entertainment options; an over-water SeaWalk, a top-deck glass-bottomed walkway extending more than 8 metres beyond the edge of the ship; plush private poolside cabanas that appear to be floating on water; the new Princess Live! television studio; the largest pastry shop at sea; a special Chef’s Table Lumiere, a private dining experience that surrounds diners in a curtain of light; and balconies on all outside staterooms.

Following the ship’s maiden voyage to Barcelona on June 16, Royal Princess will sail on Grand Mediterranean cruises throughout the summer, followed by Eastern Caribbean cruises beginning in the autumn.   John Pond

Holland America Line Celebrates 140th Year

HAL ms Volendam

One of my favourite cruise lines, Holland America, has just celebrated its 140th year.  I was fortunate enough to lunch with their VP International Sales from Seattle when in town recently. Our discussions included some of this great lines history that I find most interesting.  Hope you will too.

Holland America offers cruising for those that want that little extra.  Food and service are top drawer and the ships décor is elegant and very tasteful. No glitz here.

Holland America was founded in 1873 as the Netherlands-American Steamship Company (NASM), a shipping and Passenger line. Because it was headquartered in Rotterdam and provided service to the Americas, it became known as Holland America Line (HAL).

Tony Archibald + J.SlatteryWithin 25 years, HAL owned a fleet of six cargo and passenger ships, and operated between Holland and the Dutch East Indies.  The line was primarily a carrier of immigrants from Europe to the United States until well after the turn of the century, carrying 850,000 to new lives in the New World.

Though transportation and shipping were the primary sources of revenue, in 1895 the company offered its first vacation cruise.  In 1973, the company sold its cargo shipping division.  In 1989, HAL became a wholly owned subsidiary of Carnival Corp., the largest cruise company in the world.  Today, the premium cruise leader operates 14 ships to seven continents and carries nearly 700,000 cruise passengers a year.

Here are a few notable dates of interest in HAL’s history.

1873             The official founding date of the Nederlandsch-Amerikaansche Stoomvaart Maatschappij (NASM) in Rotterdam.

1882             HAL begins operations from Hoboken, N.J. USA

1883             The “dam” suffix is adopted for the names of HAL passenger liners.

DSC000341914–1918             World War I sees the loss of six HAL ships and 13 employees. Sitting in a Belfast building dock, Statendam II becomes the British troopship Justicia, which was torpedoed and sunk in 1918.  The company resumes business after the war with 10 ships.

1939–1945             At the start of World War II, HAL had 25 ships; nine remained at war’s end. 264 employees lost their lives. At the beginning of the war, Westernland, berthed at Falmouth, England, becomes the seat of the Netherlands government.  ss Nieuw Amsterdam sails half a million miles transporting 400,000 troops.

1975             The Prinsendam conducts HAL’ s first Alaska cruise on the Inside Passage itinerary.

NOVEMBER 10, 2003             HAL announces a $225-million Signature of Excellence® initiative to provide unparalleled product and service enhancements to its fleet of five-star ships. Signature of Excellence® raises the standard in premium cruising with enhancements such as plush Euro-top mattresses and large fluffy towels in staterooms, Culinary Arts Center, presented by Food & Wine magazine, and Explorations Café powered by The New York Times.  The initiative expands and to date tops enhancements of more than $425 million.

DEC 14, 2009             World Ocean & Cruise Liner Society members names Holland America Line as the Best Overall Cruise Value for the 17th consecutive year for its premium cruise experience.

Norfolk Island on the Cruise Map

Carnival Spirit

Australia’s largest cruise operator Carnival Australia has welcomed Federal Government funding support for Norfolk Island, which it says will open the way for a significant increase in cruise ship visits to the island.

Carnival Australia CEO Ann Sherry said the new Regional Development Fund allocation would allow Norfolk Island to make much-needed improvements to its cruise infrastructure to improve   the reliability of passenger transfers.

“Our ships have missed more than 70 per cent of scheduled calls to Norfolk Island in recent years due to the combined effect of prevailing weather and the operating limitations of normal cruise ship tenders,” Ms Sherry said.

Ann Sherry CEO Carnival Australia

Ann Sherry CEO Carnival Australia

“As a result we’ve had to virtually remove Norfolk Island from our itineraries year, which has been very disappointing. Only last week weather conditions near the island meant we had to abort one of only two visits planned for Norfolk Island this year, disappointing our 2000 passengers and creating another missed opportunity for the cash-strapped Island.

Ms Sherry said Carnival Australia had last year funded the design of purpose-built tender boats that could be operated by certified Norfolk Island locals to ensure the transfer of passengers from its ships to the island in the swell conditions often experienced in local waters.

“The new Government funding means the island can now go ahead and order the construction of these tenders and we can look at increasing our visits. We estimate that more than 70 per cent of our scheduled calls will happen once the new certified tender boats are available, which gives us the confidence to include Norfolk Island in future itineraries.”

“It’s great news for our passengers and wonderful news for Norfolk Island which will receive a real economic boost from the cruise ship visits. A successful cruise industry could deliver thousands of tourists a year to the island and add millions of dollars in economic value to the community.”

Ms Sherry said P&O Cruises, which is operated by Carnival Australia, had longstanding connections to Norfolk Island which featured on the cruise line’s first itinerary from Australia in 1932. She said visits to the island by P&O Cruises in recent years had been very popular, with passengers enjoying the island’s wonderful blend of history, culture and natural beauty.

“With the knowledge that the new infrastructure is on the way we’ll be looking at increasing P&O Cruises’ visits to Norfolk Island again once the works are complete.

“We’ll also be spreading the word amongst Carnival Australia’s other brands including Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruise Lines, Cunard, Holland America Line, Seabourn and P&O Cruises World Cruising to let them know that Norfolk Island will soon be back on the cruise map.”

Great news for Australian Cruisers and another regular port to explore. John Pond

LESS GLITZ – MORE GLAMOUR with Celebrity Solstice

Celebrity Solstice - Aerial at Sea Miami Shoreline Celebrity Cruises

As the newest and most contemporary ship based in our region, Celebrity Solstice has redefined cruising from Australia.  She carried a wide range of guests from across the globe, with 45 per cent of guests coming from Australia and New Zealand,” said Gavin Smith, regional vice president and managing director of Celebrity Cruises Australia.

This superliner is based in Australia during our cruise season, features many sailings that range from one to 18-night cruises.

Local Economy Benefits.

According to Gavin Smith, Celebrity Solstice’s arrival is not only a hit with Australian passengers; but she has a positive impact on the Australian economy as well.  “Each turnaround is a massive operation; 5,700 guests get on and off the ship – the equivalent of around 12 A380s, 115 coaches or 1,500 taxis.  Each Sydney turnaround, we estimate a contribution of over $8 million to the Australian economy,” said Smit

DSC_0808Celebrity Solstice returns to Australia shortly on 23 October 2013 for a second extended season and will offer a total of 16 cruises, with more itinerary options to the South Pacific islands.

While Celebrity Cruises is a fairly new name in cruising in Australia, it is well established in Europe and the United States where the cruising bible, the Berlitz Guide to Cruising and Cruise Ships 2012 gave Celebrity Solstice the highest rating of any ship to be based in Australia.

Celebrity Solstice brought a number of firsts for Celebrity Cruises in Australia and New Zealand. With her cool, contemporary design and exceptional service, Celebrity Solstice introduced features never before seen in our waters, such as the world’s first half-acre grass Lawn Club at sea, daily glass blowing shows from the renowned Corning Museum of Glass and spa holiday inspired AquaClass cabins. Carrying up to 3,148 passengers and a guest to staff ratio of 2:1, some 85 per cent of cabins on board Celebrity Solstice have balconies and suites come with butler service, as well as a number of personalised services in Concierge class and AquaClass.

The ship boasts no less than ten dining venues.  One of the leading restaurant designers, Adam Tihany, is famed for creating legendary New York restaurants Per Se, Jean Georges and Le Cirque, and his influence is evident in the design of the dramatic two-level Grand Épernay main dining room.  There are also five speciality restaurants including the classic steakhouse “Tuscan Grille”, fine dining in “Murano”, Asian specialities in “Silk Harvest”, indulgent yet fresh healthy options in “Blu”, and crepes at “Bistro on Five”. There are also a number of stylish bars and lounges on board including the ice-topped Martini Bar and the wine cellar on board is second-to-none, including a range of fine champagnes. Wine tastings are also a key feature and at “Cellarmasters” wine bar, guests can even choose their own wine at the touch of a button with the “Enomatic” wine serving system.

While there are a number of adults-only areas including the AquaSpa and one of the pools, children aged three to 11 on board will be happily occupied in the Fun Factory, while for teens the X Club, features teen oriented entertainment and a dance club. Although kids are well catered for the demographics appear to be in the over 50 arena.

Celebrity Solstice cruises for the 2013-14 season include:

  • A 17-night Trans Pacific cruise from Honolulu to Sydney on 5 October 2014 which calls at Hawaii, French Polynesia and New Zealand
  • Three South Pacific cruises including one NEW 9-night cruise and two 8-night cruises – plus one 12-night South Pacific Fiji cruise
  • Five 12-night open-jaw cruises between Sydney and Auckland (3 Sydney to Auckland and 2 Auckland to Sydney)
  • One 14-night Sydney to Auckland Christmas and New Year cruise, and one 14-night Auckland to Sydney cruise
  • A 17-night Australia and New Zealand cruise from Auckland to Perth which can be combined with the following 17-night ‘Top End’ Round Australia cruise from Perth to Sydney to create a 34-night circumnavigation of Australia cruise
  • One 3-night sampler cruise departing Sydney on Thursday 23 October 2014
  • An 18-night Trans Pacific cruise from Sydney to Honolulu on 3 April 2015

Virtually Impossible to Fall OFF A CRUISE SHIP

John Pond HT:6'2" showing height of guard rail

John Pond HT:6’2″ showing height of guard rail on Carnival Spirit

EDITORIAL: Virtually Impossible to Fall OFF A CRUISE SHIP   Tragically we recently read of passengers “falling off cruise ships”.  This has caused some people to ask just how safe are cruise ships and could it happen to them.

In this writer’s opinion, having been on over 60 cruises, it is virtually impossible to fall off a cruise ship by accident under normal conditions.  Guardrails come up to most people’s breast area and even if one were to run up against or be pushed accidentally onto the rail, its height would preclude falling over.

Many people are reported to have fallen overboard from cruise ships, mainly in the US – Caribbean part of the world.  After investigation they are usually listed as “no foul play” which is another way of saying possible suicide.  Of course people can be thrown over, but this is not an easy task.  Another possible scenario are hi-jinks with individuals sitting, climbing or trying to walk on the rail, this naturally could lead to disaster.

Cruise ships have video cameras on many decks that are monitored, but it is virtually impossible to monitor up to 60 or more cameras at the same time.

Some media are quick to point the finger and blame cruise lines.  When the same thing happens on dry land it barely rates a mention. So unless you are over 7 feet high, don’t worry about falling off a cruise ship.

An important thing to remember is, in the unlikely event that you witness this happening, throw a lifebuoy over the side to mark the spot, call out loudly “man overboard”, then immediately call 911 (the emergency phone number on most ships manned 24/7) on one of the many phones placed around all cruise ships and report “man overboard”.  In this case the likely scenario is that the bridge will stop the ship, go back and locate the buoy as a starting point and lower rescue craft to search.  Naturally speed is of the essence for a satisfactory outcome.  If, as a passenger you ever see other passengers skylarking or climbing on railings, immediately report the matter to security, you could prevent a tragedy.  John Pond. HOT NEWS – Carnival 2nd Ship & MORE

Carn Spirit

Although our cruise season is officially over, it’s almost time for our next to start. Lets face it, as far as I am concerned the cruise season is never over as it’s always a great time to cruise.  Booking ahead can offer some outstanding bargains as cruise lines want to fill their cabins as early as possible. I usually prefer to cruise outside the “so called” season when destinations are not crowded.

With cruising so popular with Australians, don’t wait until the last minute as it’s easy to miss out altogether.

HOT NEWS: CARNIVAL CRUISE LINES ANNOUNCES SECOND SHIP FOR AUSTRALIA:

In response to overwhelming demand by Aussie holidaymakers for the Carnival Spirit experience, Carnival Cruise Lines have just announced the upcoming arrival of a second ship, Carnival Legend, sailing seasonally from Sydney from 24 September 2014.

A sister ship to Carnival Spirit, the newest and largest ship home ported in Sydney year-round, Carnival Legend will offer Australians more of the memorable experiences that have proved popular since Spirit’s arrival in October 2012. To date, more than 100,000 guests have booked a holiday on Carnival Spirit, and approximately 60 per cent of those are never-before cruisers, an indication of the growing interest in cruise holidays.

Australia Leads the World as Cruise Passenger Numbers Surge to New High

Gavin Smith,

Gavin Smith,

The annual general report on the Australian cruise industry, CLIA, was presented by Chairman Gavin Smith (Royal Caribbean) and CLIA General Manager Brett Jardine.  I believe their report should be of interest to all cruisers and potential cruisers. Australia is leading the world in cruising growth.  Here are some of the highlights of the report.  John Pond.

A new report has confirmed that Australia’s cruise industry growth continues to lead the world, with passenger numbers surging 11 per cent last year to hit a record high of 694,062.

For the second consecutive year, the growth of the Australian cruise passenger market has surpassed other major cruise markets, with last year’s 11 per cent increase equalled only by Germany. By comparison, North American passenger numbers grew by 2 per cent in 2012 and the UK remained steady.

The 2012 Australian Cruise Industry Report also shows that the local industry now has the second highest population penetration rate in the world, with the equivalent of 3 per cent of Australians taking a cruise last year. Only the long-established North American cruise market had a higher penetration rate at 3.3 per cent.

Releasing the report in Sydney today, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) Australasia’s Chairman Gavin Smith said 2012 was the eighth consecutive year of double digit growth for cruise passenger numbers, underlining Australians’ increasing enthusiasm for cruising.

Jennifer Vandekreeke, Director Carnival Cruise Lines with Brett Jardine, GM CLIA

Jennifer Vandekreeke, Director Carnival Cruise Lines with Brett Jardine, GM CLIA

“In only four years, the number of Australians taking a cruise holiday has more than doubled from 330,290 in 2008 to almost 700,000, while over the past decade we’ve seen an average annual growth rate of 20 per cent – a remarkable result for any industry,” Mr Smith said.

“Clearly Australians are responding to the growing number of cruise holidays on offer from Australian ports, as well as our strong dollar, which is encouraging more people to cruise overseas.

“There’s also an increasing awareness among Australian holidaymakers about the tremendous value of cruising and the wide range of cruise holidays available, from relaxing river cruises to fun family breaks and adventurous expedition voyages.”

Mr Smith said while the outlook for the cruise industry remained buoyant, a focus on appropriate port infrastructure and supportive government policies would be crucial to the continued growth of Australian passenger numbers.

The 2012 report includes its first breakdown of cruise passenger age, which reveals almost half of Australian cruise passengers in 2012 were under the age of 50, while a quarter were aged under 40 and one-third were over 61 years.

The report also found 43 per cent of cruise passengers came from New South Wales in 2012, while Queensland accounted for 22 per cent, Victoria 16 per cent and Western Australia 9 per cent. On a per capita basis, the Australian Capital Territory had the highest population penetration rate with 5.5 per cent of residents cruising, while NSW followed with 4.1 per cent and Queensland with 3.3 per cent.

Meanwhile, a new insight into the passenger mix onboard roundtrip cruises from Australia as well asTransTasman and TransPacific cruises shows Australians accounted for 84 per cent of passengers on those voyages, with  international travellers representing 16 per cent, or close to 100,000 passengers.

Other key findings of the CLIA Australasia 2012 Australian Cruise Industry Report include:

• The most popular destination for Australian passengers was the South Pacific which accounted for 36.4 per cent of the market in 2012 (252,555 passengers)

• Europe is now the biggest fly-cruise market for Australians with passenger numbers rising 26 per cent to 57,719 (8.3 per cent of the market)

• River cruising numbers continue to expand with 12 per cent more passengers (39,275) opting for this niche holiday experience

• The Caribbean achieved the highest growth rate with a 36 per cent rise to 17,316 Australian passengers

• Collectively, US destinations including Alaska and the Caribbean account for 8.3 per cent of the market (57,396 passengers)

• Shorter cruises of 1-4 days experienced the greatest growth in 2012 rising 38 per cent, with 76,719 Australians opting for a short break cruise.

The Australian Cruise Industry Report looks at key trends drawn from data supplied by CLIA member cruise lines carrying Australian passengers around the world.

Formerly the International Cruise Council Australasia, CLIA (Cruise Lines International Association) Australasia, is one of 11 regional cruise associations which joined together in December 2012 to form a common global cruise organisation under the CLIA banner. CLIA associations around the world are committed to industry training, raising consumer awareness of cruising and assisting with regional advocacy issues. END CRUISE SEASON

Celebrity Solstice - Ugene Tan 215Last week, Rhapsody of the Seas departed Sydney for the last time this season, marking the official end to Australia’s summer cruise season and wrapping up a season full of superlatives for Royal Caribbean and Celebrity Cruises – bigger, grander, more beautiful and more popular than ever before.   Australians enjoyed the biggest and most innovative ships ever to be homeported here with many features never before seen in the region – such as ice skating on Voyager of the Seas – as well as a real life lawn on Celebrity Solstice, said to be the newest and most stylish superliner based down under.

In all, the Roral Caribbean   cruise company had five ships from two cruise lines in Australia for the summer, carrying 170,000 guests – nearly twice as many as the previous season.  With three ships sailing in the region, Royal Caribbean International became the largest cruise line in Sydney while sister brand Celebrity Cruises had two ships here for the first time.

“Just three years ago we had one ship offering 15 sailings from Sydney; today we have a fleet of five world class superliners and almost 70 cruises on offer,” said Adam Armstrong, commercial director, Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited Australia.  “This season we also introduced the two largest and newest superliners ever based in Australia.  The arrival of Voyager of the Seas and Celebrity Solstice made headlines across the country and redefined Australian cruising forever.”

Adam Armstrong RCI

Adam Armstrong RCI

Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas, Radiance of the Seas and Rhapsody of the Seas, and Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Solstice and Celebrity Millennium sailed a total of 67 cruises and visited 54 ports in 14 countries. Compared to the previous season, the number of cruise nights doubled while the total number of cruises sailed increased by 50 per cent.

During the season, the three Royal Caribbean ships sailed 53 cruises and called on 49 ports in 14 countries, including new ports calls to Singapore, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City and Picton, New Zealand. Celebrity Cruises’ 2012-13 Australian season featured 14 cruises calling on 35 ports in nine countries. This included first visits for the cruise line to Port Douglas, Port Hedland, Noumea, Singapore and Bali.

Of course there were many other cruise lines based in Australia, not just for our cruise season, but permanently here throughout the year.  It’s amazing that most of these ships sail with a full compliment of passengers; such is our love for cruising.

The 2013-14 Season

Carn SpiritRoyal Caribbean will be back for another big summer this coming October, with Rhapsody of the Seas the first ship off the mark, arriving in Sydney on 5 October 2013, followed closely by Radiance of the Seas on 11 October and Voyager of the Seas on 7 November. Celebrity Solstice arrives in Sydney on 23 October and Celebrity Millennium calls in for a brief visit on her way from Alaska to Asia.

According to Adam Armstrong of RCI, “Booking momentum is solid for both cruise lines – and prices are increasing slightly – although it’s not too late to book for next summer, with cruises available from under $1,000 per person for seven nights.”

John Pond: As a senior who loves cruising, it so easy to book a departure from an Australian port, no hours of flying to Europe, Asia or The Americas, never the less many Australians do just that, as there are great bargains to be had and so many exotic locations to see. There are many cruises to be had throughout the year, Carnival, P&O, and Princess are based here year round.  Cruises may also be booked on the many ships visiting our shores annually.

More home ports, more convenience: For the first time ever, P&O is offering round trip itineraries from all mainland state capitals so one really can cruise to more places from more places. P&O is cruising from Adelaide, Fremantle, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, as well as Auckland for our New Zealand passengers. It just keeps getting better and better.

National Geographic Orion 2014 Calendar of Sailings Released

As most dedicated cruisers will realize, Orion Expedition Cruises has been sold to Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic fleet. They have released their Calendar of Sailings for 2014 when, as part of the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic fleet, Orion will be renamed National Geographic Orion.

National Geographic Orion will venture further afield in 2014 with new itineraries that include destinations in Micronesia and the Islands of Moluccas – a heady mix of island cultures, World War II naval and military sites and it is said brilliant snorkeling and diving. All new South Pacific island voyages include the Loyalty Islands, Fiji, Samoa, Millennium Atoll, Tahiti, Pitcairn, Easter Island, while voyages to Antarctica will for the first time focus on the Antarctic Peninsula and the wildlife sanctuaries of South Georgia and the Falkland Islands.

Popular favorite, Borneo, will again include visits to Camp Leakey for exclusive orangutan and wildlife experiences, and hallmark National Geographic Orion voyages to Australia’s Kimberley coastline remain – one with a variation that includes Rowley Shoals.  Additionally, there are expeditions that include Komodo, Flores, Asmat, the Spice Islands, Torres Strait and the Great Barrier Reef.

JP: With more emphasis on snorkeling and less on luxury, lets hope they do not alienate their main Australian customer base which I have found to be more in the over 50 demographic.   John Pond

ROYAL CARIBBEAN’S NEW QUANTUM-CLASS SHIPS

April 20, 2013 1 comment

Quantum-Exterior-4-keynote (1)

Just when one thought ships couldn’t get any better, Royal Caribbean International this week unveiled first details of the next generation of cruise vacations – Quantum cruising.

The Quantum class of ships have taken a dramatic leap forward, introducing more game-changing “firsts at sea” these include a skydiving experience, a thrilling adventure that transports guests more than 300 feet in the air on a breathtaking journey; other cutting-edge transformative venues include the largest indoor sports and entertainment complex at sea with bumper cars, roller skating and more; and the cruise line’s largest and most advanced staterooms ever.

Gavin Smith Managing Director Royal Caribbean Australia

Gavin Smith Managing Director Royal Caribbean Australia

I spoke with Australian boss of Royal Caribbean Gavin Smith who said, “Quantum of the Seas will redefine the way consumers from all over the world will consider cruising. Royal Caribbean International has once again demonstrated it’s leadership in ship design and I can tell you that our offices have already received enquiries for details of how they can get onboard to enjoy this ground breaking ship. Australians love Royal Caribbean and with ships like Quantum of the Seas on the horizon, I am sure that will continue”.

These include the industry’s first virtual balconies.  Every stateroom on Quantum of the Seas will have a view.

Unprecedented “Firsts At Sea”

Having led the industry by introducing incredible signature offerings such as the Rock Climbing Wall, ice-skating rink, FlowRider surf simulator, Central Park and AquaTheater, Royal Caribbean will advance the onboard experience even further by delivering a ground breaking line-up of “firsts at sea” on Quantum-class ships.  New features exclusive to Royal Caribbean include:

  • RipCord by iFly, the first skydiving experience at sea which allows everyone from first-time flyers to seasoned skydivers to enjoy the sheer thrill and exhilaration of skydiving in a safe, controlled, and simulated environment.
  • North Star, an engineering marvel, takes guests to new heights – literally – with a jewel-shaped, glass capsule, transporting them on a spectacular journey more than 300 feet above the ocean and over the sides of the ship to deliver awe-inspiring 360-degree views.

“We are excited to be introducing major advancements in ship design and offerings on Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas,” said Adam Goldstein, president & CEO, Royal Caribbean International.  “The innovative spirit of our brand is alive and well, and with Quantum class, we will deliver more unexpected activities in the most extraordinary spaces. Our guests should prepare to be wowed.”

New Transformational Signature Venues

With Quantum class, Royal Caribbean marries new innovations with significant architectural design elements to introduce spectacular spaces.  On Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas guests will find endless possibilities with three new signature venues.

  • A revolutionary concept, Two70° is a multi-level great room that is sure to become one of the most iconic venues onboard Quantum class.  The space is aptly named for its magnificent 270-degree panoramic sea views through vast, floor-to-ceiling glass walls spanning almost three decks at the stern of the ship.  Two70° seamlessly fuses entertainment and technology to create a transformative journey from day to night.  The perfect setting to connect with the sea during the day, Two70° provides a modern and comfortable living room space for guests to sit back and relax.  As the sun sets and the lights go down, the dazzling space gradually reveals its evening persona, delighting guests with spectacular, mysterious and unexpected entertainment at night.  Unparalleled technology means every show at Two70° is multidimensional and immerses the audience through a combination of live performers, including aerialists, as well as breathtaking video and digital scenery.
  • The largest indoor active space at sea, SeaPlex is a distinctive and flexible sporting and entertainment venue with thrilling new features that will inspire guests of all ages to let loose and connect with their playful sides.  Delivering more first at sea experiences, guests can experience a circus school with flying trapeze, or play basketball on a full-size regulation basketball court.  By night, the first-ever bumper car and roller skating offerings deliver fun and excitement.  Or, guests can dance to music orchestrated from a floating DJ booth which hovers above the activity below.
  • A performance hall and the hottest live music venue on Quantum class, Music Hall is the place for guests to enjoy intimate and exclusive access to live performances, DJs, theme night parties, billiards and more.  Rebellious and edgy, Music Hall’s two-story design is inspired by the spirit of rock and roll.

The Next Generation of Stateroom Accommodations

With guest comfort and convenience in mind, Royal Caribbean debuts the most spacious and luxurious accommodations ever, introducing rooms that on average are nine per cent larger than those of Oasis class ships.  Sophisticated, upscale design, layouts and finishes create a home away from home.  Boasting Royal Caribbean’s new smart design concept, each stateroom features contemporary designs with easy-to-use customizable layouts and intuitive larger storage solutions.

  • Now every room on Quantum of the Seas has a view, with the exciting introduction of Virtual Balcony staterooms. This design concept brings virtual balconies to interior staterooms offering expansive real-time views of the ocean and exciting destinations.
  • For multi-generational families, Family-Connected staterooms deliver more flexibility, using three different stateroom categories which connect to form a special layout that provides separate bedrooms and bathrooms for all.  These accommodations allow families and groups of friends traveling together to enjoy the best of both worlds when it comes to together and alone time.
  • With Quantum of the Seas, Royal Caribbean introduces the largest variety of stateroom categories, including new Studio staterooms, some with balconies for single travellers, three Junior Suite categories and larger Loft Suites.

Signature Features Return and More New Surprises To Come

The adults-only Solarium, along with an outdoor pool, a new indoor pool with operable roof and a H2O Zone kids’ aqua park, will be featured on the top deck.  Signature Royal Caribbean venues and experiences popular with families such as the Rock Climbing Wall; FlowRider surf simulator; the award-winning Adventure Ocean children’s program; the Royal Babies and Tots Nursery; and the DreamWorks entertainment and events featuring the characters from animated movies: Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar; will all be back on Quantum class. Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas also will make a quantum leap forward in its culinary offerings providing the most flexible dining options and more specialty restaurants than ever before. Additional details about dining, entertainment and other unexpected features and amenities on Quantum of the Seas will be unveiled in the coming months.

Quantum class will debut in autumn 2014 (northern hemisphere) with Quantum of the Seas, followed by her sister-ship Anthem of the Seas in spring 2015 (northern hemisphere).  Quantum ships span 18 decks, encompass 167,800 gross registered tons, carry 4,180 guests at double occupancy and feature 2,090 staterooms.  Quantum of the Seas will sail out of the New York Harbor from her homeport of Cape Liberty on 7- to 12-night itineraries during the winter 2014/15 (northern hemisphere) season.  Bookings will be available to Crown & Anchor Society loyalty program members starting May 27, 2013 before opening to the general public on June 4. More information on Quantum of the Seas is available at www.RoyalCaribbean.com/Quantum.

I particularly applaud the addition of Studio Staterooms, a real boon for single cruisers, John Pond.

LESS GLITZ – MORE GLAMOUR with Celebrity

April 8, 2013 1 comment

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Celebrity has it all, Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Solstice departed Sydney last Monday (8 April) bound for Honolulu, she has just completed her biggest cruise season yet.

Although I have not had the pleasure of sailing on this vessel, I have spent many hours on board and without a doubt, Australians love her sophisticated style. As the newest and most contemporary ship based in the region, Celebrity Solstice has redefined cruising from Australia.  She carried a wide range of guests from across the globe, with 45 per cent of guests coming from Australia and New Zealand,” said Gavin Smith, regional vice president and managing director of Celebrity Cruises Australia.

The maiden season for the newest superliner to be based in Australia featured 12 sailings that ranged from one to 18-night cruises and called at 28 ports in seven countries. The recently refurbished Celebrity Millennium also stopped in Sydney for a brief visit, her first visit here since she was based in Australia for the 2010-11 cruise season.  Over 38,500 people cruised with Celebrity Cruises over the summer on these two ships, 90 per cent of which were on Celebrity Solstice alone.

According to Gavin Smith, Celebrity Solstice’s arrival was not only a hit with Australian passengers; she had a positive impact on the Australian economy as well.  “Each turnaround is a massive operation; 5,700 guests get on and off the ship – the equivalent of around 12 A380s, 115 coaches or 1,500 taxis.  Each Sydney turnaround, we estimate a contribution of over $8 million to the Australian economy,” said Smith.

Celebrity Solstice returns to Australia on 23 October 2013 for a second extended season and will offer a total of 16 cruises, with more itinerary options to the South Pacific islands.

In my opinion, this ship will sell out fast on her next season.

Prices for a 12-night New Zealand cruise sailing from Sydney to Auckland on 28-Nov-13 start from $1,329 per person.

McGrath Foundation event on Celebrity Solstice 4 March 2013

tn-Adam Armstrong and Kylea Tink 800- Opera House

Although the rain threatened to stop play earlier in the day yesterday, Sydney turned on her breathtaking charm just in time for a one-of-a-kind evening on board luxury liner Celebrity Solstice, hosted by Celebrity Cruises in support of The McGrath Foundation. The event was attended by Chairman and Co-founder of the McGrath Foundation, Glenn McGrath, along with 80 supporters to help raise funds for McGrath Breast Care Nurses in communities right across Australia.

The evening began with pre-dinner drinks at the ship’s Lawn Club – half an acre of real lawn perched on the top deck of the luxury liner – where guests took in dramatic views of the Sydney Opera House on one side and the Harbour Bridge on the other. Some glamorous guests got into the spirit by kicking off their shoes to feel the real grass under their feet, while others watched as a glass vase, in signature McGrath Foundation ‘hot’ pink, took shape under the skilful hands of Celebrity Solstice’s Corning Glass Museum glass artisans in the ship’s unique glass blowing studio. The resulting glass art piece was donated to the McGrath Foundation as part of the evening’s auction

After the lawn party, guests made their way to the ship’s specialty dining restaurant, Tuscan Grille, where Foundation Friend and TV personality, Johanna Griggs, MC’ed as guests ate a sumptuous dinner, while The Voice finalist Darren Percival crooned soulful tunes  and entertained guests with skills not seen on TV, from beat-boxing to Louis Armstrong impersonations.

Cel Solstice Dining Room

I don’t usually present “deals” from shipping companies on my blog but, as I predicted, due to the increased competition in the Australian and International market place there are some great cruising deals on offer.

Celebrity Cruise Lines is part of the Royal Caribbean Group, they are a favourite of mine.  Their ships are tasteful and their food and service  5 star.   Here is a release I just received (10 Jan 2013) that may be of interest to my cruising readers.  John Pond

International Cruise Council Australasia Joins Global Association

December 17, 2012 Leave a comment
Brett Jardine

Brett Jardine

The International Cruise Council Australasia today announced it has joined with eight other cruise industry associations to form a common organisation which will serve as the voice and advocacy leader of the global cruise industry.

Under the change, ICCA will become known as Cruise Lines International Association Australasia.

“The new association will play a vital role in proactively shaping the policy and regulatory environments on a global level and promoting cruising with various constituencies through more effective coordination, communication and stakeholder engagement.”

ICCA Chairman Gavin Smith said the new organisation would take effect immediately, with transitioning, including the introduction of the name change, occurring during 2013. Mr Smith said ICCA General Manager Brett Jardine would continue to report to the Australasian board as well as to the new global CEO, Christine Duffy.

Mr Smith said the transformation of ICCA reflected the continuing growth of the cruise industry, both locally and globally. “Australasia is the fastest growing cruise market in the world, with cruise lines from around the globe sailing in our waters and carrying our passengers on cruises across the world, so it makes enormous sense for us to join

with our international counterparts and create a cohesive global partnership,” Mr Smith said. “This new structure will strengthen the cruise industry’s voice in Australia and New Zealand and provide greater resources for the benefit of our travel agent and cruise line members.”

The CLIA global organisation will represent the cruise industry at the International Maritime Organisation based in London, the International Labour Organisation in Geneva and with other international maritime and shipping organisations around the world.  They will focus on global strategy, international industry issues and strategic communications.  Local and regional matters will continue to be managed by the regional national associations in North America, Europe, and Australasia. The new association’s employees will be located across the globe.  Regional and country offices along with new staff appointments will be the subject of a future announcement.

CELEBRITY SOLSTICE A WINNER

December 13, 2012 Leave a comment

Celebrity Solstice - Ugene Tan 215I had the pleasure of spending a day on Royal Caribbean’s Celebrity Solstice last week. What a great ship.  It was love at first sight.  Let’s face it, most ships are very similar, not a lot of difference, but not true with Solstice.  Many new ships are a little garish for my taste with a lot of “Las Vegas Glitz” style décor, however Solstice spells class, from top to toe. This ship is extremely tasteful (in my opinion), luxury décor and design.  I can’t wait to sail on her.

When launched in November 2008, this ship exceeded expectations. Not only does she feature an impressive and sophisticated design, but there is plenty to do on board. Celebrity Solstice has ten outstanding restaurants, stylish bars, boutiques and a gorgeous solarium surrounded by waterfalls, as well as a ten-storey atrium – but perhaps the most incredible aspect of this ship is the half acre of real grass growing on the upper deck.  Called the Lawn Club, this vast area of lawn enables passengers to kick off their shoes, enjoy the feel of soft grass between their toes and play lawn bowls or bocce.

Celebrity Solstice is the highest-rated ship based in Australia, for service, dining and accommodation according to this year’s Berlitz Guide. The spacious suites on Celebrity Solstice come with their own European-style butler service, verandas, impressive entertainment systems and master bedrooms. Penthouse and royal suites also feature separate lounge areas, and the penthouse suites each have their own baby grand piano.  The Celebrity Cruises’ youth and teen program has activities tailored to interest the young with activities including treasure hunts, arts and crafts, relay races, ice cream sundae making and karaoke organised by trained counsellors.  A fun room for kids aged from 3 to 12 is available, called the Fun Factory, there is also a club teen lounge, video game room and a broadcast room that the whole family can enjoy.

Adam ArmstrongAdam Armstrong, Commercial Director Royal Caribbean Cruises Australia, who was my host on my visit to this great ship said “Celebrity Solstice was the newest, most modern, innovative cruise ship ever to be based in Australia for our cruise season. Until now Australians could only experience this ship’s great offerings by cruising on her in the Med or Caribbean”.

Guests on board have ten exceptional dining choices including the luxurious main dining room, The Grand Epernay Dining Room, which has a two-storey glass wine tower and magnificent chandeliers.  Other specialty dining options include The Tuscan Grille, Murano Restaurant and the Silk Harvest Restaurant which serves exotic Asian dishes. For a more casual dining experience guests can visit the Bistro, The Creperie, Oceanview Café & Grill, AquaSpa Café or Café al Bacio.  AquaClass guests have access to an exclusive dining room, Blu, an intimate, 130-seat specialty restaurant.

There are plenty of stylish bars and lounges including The Passport Bar, The Observation Lounge with its floor to ceiling windows for spectacular views, as well as Ensemble Lounge, Martini Bar, Champagne Bar, Michael’s Club and the Sunset Bar, which is located at the ship’s highest point and has a country club feel to it.  In addition to the Solstice Theatre, there is also Celebrity Central where guests can enjoy lively entertainment, including late night comedy shows and live musical performances as well as a cinema, casino and art gallery.  Soltice will be returning for next year’s cruise season. I would recommend that readers book well in advance as this ship will certainly sell out fast.

I look forward to reviewing this ship in more detail at a later date, but if you enjoy the finer things in life, this is the ship for you. John Pond

LORD MAYOR LAUNCHES NEW YEARS EVE EVENTS ON CARNIVAL SPIRIT

December 13, 2012 Leave a comment

Carnival Australia last week, hosted an event on Carnival Spirit, now based permanently in Australia, where Lord Mayor Clover Moore announced details of Sydney’s New Years Eve celebrations.  Our hosts, Ann Sherry, CEO Carnival Australia and Jennifer Vandekreeke, Director Carnival Cruise Lines, provided some wonderful refreshments on this most popular ship.

NYE 12 Creative Ambassador Kylie Minogue was not at the event, she is due to arrive at the end of the month, we heard from her via a video message.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore went on to say that this year’s fireworks would be the best yet (they say that every year) but somehow manage to achieve their promise.

Other speakers included the NSW Police Minister, Michael Gallacher, who gave an excellent speech and asked all present to tell a police person on the beat how much we appreciate them (I agree wholeheartedly and did so on the way home).

Other speakers included Aneurin Coffey, the producer of the NYE 12 event, Heath Campanaro of Imagination, the production company producing the event, fireworks director, Fortunato Foti and Telstra marketing head, who did a long ad for Telstra and espoused the virtues of a new app for smart phones that linked with the event. (See Telstras website for detail). To download the NYE12 smartphone app visit www.sydneynewyearseve.com/app or search your app store.

As I said, we had to be satisfied with a video of Kylie. Ms Minogue, OBE, last represented Australia in Sydney when she performed during the closing ceremony of the 2000 Olympics.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore disclosed the budget at around 6 million, slightly less than last year.  Considering the world TV coverage and that Sydney festivities and fireworks are said to be the best in the world, the international recognition is priceless and should encourage tourism.

The Fred Hollows Foundation CEO, Brian Doolan, said how proud his Foundation was to be the official charity partner of the event.

Peter Taylor, Carnival’s Director of Corporate Affairs (pictured with Clover Moore), said “Spirit offers the very best views of Sydney Harbour, so it was our pleasure to host the Lord Mayor and media from around the world on board Carnival Spirit for the new years eve launch event, to give them a taste of what our passengers get to experience each time she is in Sydney. As the newest member of the Sydney community it was fitting for Spirit to play host to the launch of Sydney’s iconic new years eve event”.

Award-winning boutique river cruise line, Uniworld (www.uniworldcruises.com.au) has received continued success having been named in Cruise Critic’s annual Editors’ Picks Awards as the 2012 “Best River Cruise Line”. Adding to this prestigious accolade, overnight Uniworld has once again been included in Condé Nast Traveler’s 2013 Gold List of “Top River Cruises” scoring overall 92 out of 100 rating well ahead of other major competitors.

Condé Nast Traveler is synonymous with luxury travel and is recognised as one of the leading publications in its field, thus making this accolade a standout achievement for Uniworld. Also demonstrating the very best in cruise travel, Cruise Critic‘s 2012 awards were hand-picked by its editorial staff who have collectively spent thousands of days cruising, and who feel these cruise lines best represent excellence in each designated categories.

John Molinaro ccAccording to Cruise Critic, “Uniworld draws on the expertise of up-market sister company Red Carnation Hotels when it comes to training and inspiring its onboard crew resulting in excellent service. But what really sets this river cruise line apart is its lavish décor, superb cuisine, interesting assortment of themed tours in addition to the innovative ship designs.”

A GUIDE TO NEW CRUISE TIPPING

December 8, 2012 1 comment

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOn most cruise ships based in our waters during cruise season, it has become the practice for cruise lines to levy around $11 per person, per day service charge, that is automatically added to passengers shipboard accounts. Passengers soon learnt that this tip levy could be deleted, with a visit to the purser’s desk.

As more and more cruisers deleted these charges, many opting not to tip at all (many Australians don’t like to tip), poorly paid crew became very disenchanted with their remuneration, as tips make up a major part of their stipend.

When tips are automatically added to your account, they are distributed to the many staff that include servers in the buffet where most passengers eat their breakfast and lunch and to other, behind the scenes staff, such as dishwashers, cleaners etc. Because of this, perhaps more equitable distribution of tips, staff that were used to being tipped individually, such as cabin stewards and dining room waiters and assistant waiters, ended each cruise with less money in their pockets.

Have we seen a drop in customer service, with extra service not being remunerated individually, especially in the cabin and dining room?

As one who cruises a great deal (7 cruises this year), I believe YES, though to a very small extent, especially on the larger ships.

Due to the questionnaire that is handed out prior to the conclusion of each cruise, and which identifies quality of service in almost every area, a high quality of service is maintained.  I believe this is mainly due to a certain extent on the fear factor.

WHY? Because of this fear, I have found that dining room food waiters virtually beg their regular diners for a good, sorry excellent, report.  Apparently their next shipboard contract depends on outstanding reports.

I have never had bad service on any ship, but I have had outstanding service on many.

The word TIP supposedly means To Insure Proper Service.  In some cases (a habit I learnt from my grandfather on my first cruise in 1949 on the P&O Strathnaver) my grandfather, a wonderful man, used to tip prior to receiving a service.  WHY I remember asking, his reply was that advance appreciation usually ensures greater service.  I have carried this advice throughout my life and occasionally use this method, especially in the United States, where tipping is very much a part of their culture.

I love the shipboard dining experience and I can definitely say that I believe service on ships exceeds that on land in all restaurants, including our best. With the old system, when tips were usually given to ones waiter on the last night at dinner, I noticed that many tables were empty of guests. They had chosen to dine at the buffet, rather than have to give their waiter a tip, who had I feel sure, served them well during the voyage.

In spite of tipping procedures introduced by cruise lines, I will continue to tip cabin and main dining room attendants individually.

Many high-end cruise lines have a no tipping policy.  Of course it is incorporated in your cruise fare.  Nevertheless, I have seen many passengers on these high-end ships tipping additionally.  Unfortunately, this in a way destroys the whole system and we go back to square one.

It should be noted that when ordering drinks from your wine steward or any drinks waiter, a 15% tip is automatically included on your account, a fact that many do not realize.

Also with the popularity of alternate specialty restaurant dining, which is offered on many larger ships, when there is a charge for this restaurant, usually around $30 a head, a service charge is usually included.

Many people enjoy the tipping process, giving a cash appreciation to individuals that have made their cruise experience more memorable.  Seeing the joy that a thank you and some financial exchange may occasion makes all parties feel good, but as long as some passengers refuse to tip, I guess the new tipping systems are necessary.

Here’s a good TIP – go on a cruise soon.  John Pond ©

P&O – Save The Children

December 4, 2012 1 comment

Pacific PartnershipAustralia’s leading cruise line P&O Cruises is offering its passengers the chance to make a big impact with their small change and give back to the destinations they visit through an exciting new partnership with Save the Children. As part of the new P&O Pacific Partnership initiative, the cruise line’s passengers will donate $1 via their onboard account with the aim of raising $1 million over four years to help fund community health and education projects in Pacific Island communities.

Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, which operates P&O Cruises, officially launched the new partnership in Sydney with a $50,000 donation on behalf of the cruise line and its passengers. “Many of our passengers want to support the Pacific Island communities they visit and this new partnership with Save the Children provides a way for all of us to make a valuable contribution,” Ms Sherry said. “In line with our commitment to work with the islands we visit, P&O Cruises’ Save the Children projects will focus on the Pacific, starting with a kindergarten in the northern Vanuatu province of Sanma.”

Suzanne Dvorak, CEO of Save the Children Australia, said it was great to be partnering with an Australian company which shared the same vision to help children across the Pacific.

As well as cash donations, P&O Cruises’ passengers will be able to take a hands-on approach with an onboard knitting program Born to Knit producing blankets for newborn babies throughout the Pacific. The P&O Pacific Partnership is part of Carnival Australia’s ongoing charity program, Carnival Cares, which also supports Lifeline Australia. For more information visit: http://www.youtube.com/user/pocruisesaustralia

Surely this is $1 all passengers will be happy to see on the onboard account. John Pond

Mine is BIGGER than Yours • RCI

December 2, 2012 Leave a comment

RCI_VoyagerRoyal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas, the largest cruise ship to sail down under and call Australia home for the season.  As an invited guest, I spent 2 days cruising on this mammoth. She is big, very big and is sure to prove a favourite, especially for families with kids, big and small.

There is so much to do on board, non-stop entertainment morning till night.

When Voyager of the Seas arrived down under she revolutionised cruising in Australia, as we know it.  Not only is she the biggest ship to be based in the region at almost double the size of her contemporaries, she features concepts and experiences never before seen in this country.

Parade-A-_MG_2465Voyager is a destination.  Her sheer size allows Royal Caribbean to offer the broadest range of amenities and facilities of any cruise ship ever based in Australia and New Zealand.

Voyager of the Seas boasts a slew of firsts for cruising:

Australia’s first ice-skating rink at sea – Studio B is a 700-seat venue showcasing world class productions at night and guest ice-skating during the day.Studio B has a full-service bar, stadium seating and a state-of-the-art sound system.  Rock climbing wallVoyager of the Seas was the first ever cruise ship to introduce this feature – which has now been extended all other ships in the RCI fleet.   The Royal Promenade – replicating a street much like one you would find on land, the Royal Promenade is four decks high and is the ship’s “main street” offering food, shopping and entertainment options – as well as street parades. This street offers something for everyone and was very popular. DreamWorks characters at sea – new for 2012, guest’s young and old can enjoy interacting with characters from Shrek, Kung Fu Panda and Madagascar during their cruise with street parades, character breakfasts and photo opportunities.

IceSkating showUnlike many other large cruise ships that pass through Australia as part of lengthy world cruises, Voyager of the Seas will be based down under for a full summer season of six months, with a range of cruises from one to 14 nights and was recently confirmed to return again in summer 2013/14.

A host of other impressive facilities including a 1,350-seat Broadway-style theatre, a two-deck nightclub, a wedding chapel, an English pub, Royal Caribbean’s signature rock-climbing wall, seven dining venues, a massive kids and teens Adventure Ocean club situated close to the Adventure Beach water park.

There are special opportunities for kids to interact with characters while at Adventure Ocean – Royal Caribbean’s award winning youth centre.  Characters will make surprise appearances, and will interact in activities such as story time, dance parties and more, giving kids a holiday they won’t forget in a hurry!

RCL Cruises Ltd Australia commenced operation in December 2008 as the Australian arm of global cruise holiday company Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. In Australia the company operates Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises. In 2012, the cruise line will be the largest operator in Sydney, with five ships sailing in the region including three Royal Caribbean ‘premierships’, Voyager of the Seas, the largest and newest ship based locally, Radiance of the Seas and Rhapsody of the Seas, as well as two Celebrity Cruises ships, Celebrity Solstice and Celebrity Millennium.

If you like BIG and non stop entertainment for all the family, this could be the ship for you.

Music Cruises Australia WOWS

November 21, 2012 1 comment

Elvis ? with John Pond

Just returned from an amazing experience, 2 cruises, back to back presented by Music Cruises Australia and Johnny Welsh.  The first cruise was “The King Tribute Cruise” consisting of 14 Elvis tribute artists. They came from England, Scotland, America and Australia.  I have had the pleasure of seeing Elvis perform live in Las Vegas and I can honestly say the buzz I received from these outstanding performers was equally as good.  They were fantastic.  The music went almost 24/7 and all the ship’s many venues were filled to overflowing for every show.

Each act was so professional including the orchestra, backup singers and comedians Kenny Bennett and Morgan Kent, who also wowed us with his Rod Stewart Tribute Shows.  Without a doubt the best entertainment I have yet seen at sea, ever.

After the 3 nights cruise to nowhere along the coast, we docked at The Overseas Passenger Terminal to take on passengers for the next cruise “The 60’s and 70’s Music Cruise”.  Each cruise was a sell out. The second cruise was as exciting as the first.  Performers included Russell Morris, Swanee, The Beatnix, The Chevroles, Morgan Kent, Slyhooks, Sharon Rowntree and many tribute artistes such as Killer Queen and Kissteria, performed virtually non-stop in the various venues.

Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas had so much to offer with great service and dining choices.

The next Music Cruise presented by Johnny Welsh is scheduled for 2014 and may run a week with a destination that will allow for duty free shopping.  Judging by on board comments from the many passengers I spoke to, most said “we are returning”, including Sandra and I.

Keep your eyes open and be quick to book on the next Music Cruises Australia, as I have no doubt it will be a sellout.  More soon. John Pond

Royal Message from Australia’s own Jewel

November 14, 2012 Leave a comment

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so when this picture came across my desk, I couldn’t resist writing this blog

P&O Cruises’ Pacific Jewel made the most of its Royal Box position at Sydney’s Circular Quay last Friday, unveiling a special message for the visiting Prince of Wales.

Before Prince Charles arrived at the Quay’s Overseas Passenger Terminal, the cruise ship unfurled a 24×7-metre banner on its bow, emblazoned with the words “Royal Suite Available”.

P&O Cruises Senior Vice President Tammy Marshall said it was a wonderful coincidence that “an Australian Jewel” should be at the Quay during the royal Sydney visit. “Of course, from the Captain’s cocktails through to our fine dining restaurants, everyone on our ships is treated like royalty, but we wanted Prince Charles to know we’d love to have him and the Duchess of Cornwall onboard too,” Ms Marshall said.  John Pond

NCL Round Hawaii Cruise a MUST

November 9, 2012 Leave a comment

After recently returning from Hawaii on Carnival Spirit, it has rekindled my love of those great islands after an absence of many years.  About ten years ago I did an all island cruise on an NCL vessel and had a great time.  Think it’s about time to do another next year.  I believe NCL is the way to do it, so here are some fact and figures.

NCL’s Pride of America sails year-round from Honolulu on a spectacular seven-day inter-island Hawai`i cruise, featuring close to 100 hours in port and overnights in both Maui and Kaua`i.  Ports of call include Kahului, Maui; Hilo, Hawai`i; Kona, Hawai`i; Nãwiliwili, Kaua`i; and an afternoon cruise past the breathtaking Nãpali Coast. This cruise was recently voted the “Best Hawaii” itinerary by Porthole Cruise Magazine in their 13th Annual Readers’ Choice Awards.

“Because she is US-flagged and crewed, Pride of America is in the unique position of being the only cruise ship that can sail to the four islands of Hawai`i from Honolulu without visiting a foreign port,” said Kevin Sheehan, Norwegian Cruise Line’s chief executive officer.  “As a result of this unique offering, there is strong, ongoing demand for the ship, propelled by record-breaking guest satisfaction scores.  This is a spectacular one-of-a-kind itinerary and the cruise delivers an incredible value for the money compared to the high cost of land-based vacations in Hawai`i.”

As her name implies, the 2,124-passenger Pride of America, celebrates a ‘Best of America’ theme inspired by favorite places in the United States.  From the Capitol Atrium to the Alaska-influenced Gold Rush Pub to a New Orleans’ Mardi Gras Cabaret Lounge and Hawai`i-themed Aloha Café and Waikiki Bars, guests experience the flavor of the U.S. while visiting the country’s beautiful 50th state. The ship features 14 restaurants, nine bars and lounges, dynamic public rooms such as the Hollywood Theater, expansive children’s area featuring Norwegian’s new Splash Academy children’s programs and the state-of-the-art Santa Fe Spa & Fitness Center. The heart of the ship, the Capitol Atrium, is inspired by the Capitol Building and White House and features a decorative stone floor and a stunning backlit glass dome.

The Pride of America will receive major enhancements beginning in March 2013. www.ncl.com

CAN A CRUISE RE-KINDLE ONES ROMANCE?

November 7, 2012 Leave a comment

We live in a world of surveys, surveys and even more surveys. The latest national survey has confirmed that cruising can put the love back into many flagging relationships and confirmed how The ‘Love Boat’ series set the bar for romance on cruise ships. 74% of those questioned recommended a cruise holiday to put the romance back into a tired relationship and love life.

A third of the experienced cruise passengers who took part in the recent P&O Cruises ‘True Love at Sea’ survey said quality relationship time on the high seas made their most intimate love life even better.

Though a cruise holiday had all the ingredients for couples to rediscover romance, the survey of more than 500 people showed all bets could be off if some desirable famous faces were onboard.

When asked to choose which celebrities they would like to find on a holiday cruise, most named George Clooney (29%), Prince William (19%) or Kylie Minogue (18%).

Carnival Australia’s Vice President Corporate Affairs, Peter Taylor.

“We know from the famous ‘Love Boat’ television series, that romance blooms on the high seas and P&O Cruises’ ‘True Love at Sea’ survey confirms it also happens in real life cruising,” said Carnival Australia’s Vice President Corporate Affairs, Peter Taylor. “Our survey shows that the relaxing lifestyle on a cruise ship is a sure fire way of rekindling romance with more than 80% of those surveyed saying they felt more relaxed as couples during their cruise.”

Key findings in the P&O Cruises ‘True Love at Sea’ survey included:

  •  Was your partner more or less romantic during your cruise?
  • More romantic 39% Less romantic 5% About the same 56%
  • Did your cruise holiday make your relationship stronger, weaker or about the same?
  • Stronger 38%  Weaker 3% About the same 59%
  • Did your cruise make your intimate love life better, worse or about the same?
  • Better 32% Worse 4% About the same 64%
  • Would you recommend a cruise to rekindle your relationship and love life?
  • Yes, definitely 41% Yes, probably 34% Unsure 18% No 7%

Giving an indication of the therapeutic benefits of cruising for true love, a third of the cruise passengers surveyed said the romantic benefits of a cruise lasted more than two months after returning to shore.

Asked what cruise features contributed most to onboard romance, two-thirds nominated being able to relax (65%) and spend quality time together enjoying fine dining (17%) and onboard entertainment (8%) as well as sharing couple time thanks to onboard ‘kids’ clubs’ (4%).

Welcome Radiance of the Seas to Sydney

November 2, 2012 Leave a comment

For my readers that want to welcome Radiance to Sydney, here are some details.

  • After sailing 17 nights from Hawaii, Radiance of the Seas arrives this Friday, October 12, with over 2100 guests on board, including approximately 200 international visitors.
  • Radiance of the Seas kicks off a bumper Australian cruise season. Royal Caribbean International alone will host over 200,000 holiday-makers – an impressive leap from 35,000 guests two seasons ago and 90,000 last season.
  • Launched in 2001, Radiance of the Seas features a basketball court, a mini-golf course, an outdoor rock climbing wall, waterslide, poolside outdoor movie screen, 12 dining venues and a nine-deck high atrium with glass elevators facing the sea.
  • This is Radiance of the Seas’ second Australian season. Last year, she was the youngest and biggest ship to be based in Australia for the cruising season. This year, she is superseded by sister ship Voyager of the Seas (arriving Sydney November 22). At 137,270 tonnes, the 3,100-guest Voyager of the Seas will be the largest cruise ship based in Australia, and features an ice-skating rink and the first DreamWorks experience at sea.
  • Royal Caribbean International will offer more cruises and carry more guests from Sydney than any other cruise line in the 2012-13 season, making it Sydney’s largest cruise line this summer.

I am looking forward to writing more after my inspection, stay tuned, John Pond

Timing and details:

Friday 12 October 2012

Voyager of the Seas Arrives in Oz

November 2, 2012 Leave a comment

The biggest and most innovative cruise ship to be based in Australia, Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas, has finally arrived.

Arriving at 6am in Port Hedland today, Friday 2 November, she literally stopped a town. Many residents of the town, encouraged by the Mayor, all took a day off work to welcome the ship and play host to the 3,200 passengers onboard – around a third of which from the USA and Europe.

This is the first ever Australian port of call for the vessel and is the penultimate call of a 14-night cruise from Singapore to Fremantle via Thailand and Vietnam.

Voyager of the Seas has 1556 staterooms and will introduce a host of innovations including its ‘Royal Promenade’ indoor main street, an ice rink, skating track, golf simulator and inside cabins with a view.

She will operate 12 New Zealand, South Pacific and Australian itineraries ranging from one to 18 nights, sailing from Sydney and Fremantle.

Over the next fortnight, Voyager will visit many ports throughout Australia for the first time including:

November 2 – Port Headland, WA
November 5 – Fremantle, WA
November 9 – Adelaide, SA
November 11 – Melbourne, VIC
November 13 – Hobart, TAS
November 22 – Sydney, NSW

Be one of the first to see Voyager of the Seas as she arrives in your home city for the first time.

Australia’s historic first megaliner measures in at 137,000 tons, 311 metres long, 48 metres wide with 15 passenger decks.  At almost double the size of any ship currently based in Australia, she hosts 3,114 guests at double capacity or over 3,800 at full capacity.  Can’t wait to inspect her on her Sydney arrival, John Pond.

Tauck to Include Connecticut in Redesigned Tour of New England

October 29, 2012 Leave a comment

Tauck, one of the world’s top luxury travel companies, have just announced that it would be bringing travellers to the Hartford area next year on a newly redesigned tour of New England.  Tauck made the announcement jointly with Connecticut Governor Dannel P. Malloy and filmmaker Ken Burns at the Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford, which will be featured on the new itinerary.
When it officially begins operating next spring, Tauck’s “Hidden Gems of New England” tour will mark the first time the 87-year-old company has hosted guests for an overnight stay in Connecticut.   The tour will operate with departures from June through October, and Tauck president Jennifer Tombaugh said the company expects to bring several hundred travellers into the greater Hartford area in each of the coming years.

The redesigned Tauck tour will have the company’s guests arrive at Bradley International Airport and then begin their 8-day itinerary with an overnight at the Hartford Marriott Downtown.  During their first day in Hartford, Tauck guests will enjoy a catered dinner at the Mark Twain Museum and a private, after-hours tour of the Mark Twain House.  The following morning, guests will travel to the Harriet Beecher Stowe House for a guided visit.

According to Tombaugh, the inclusion of Hartford in Tauck’s itinerary represents the concurrence of three separate factors.  “We partnered with Ken Burns and his long-time collaborator Dayton Duncan two years ago to develop tours that incorporate the themes and topics of their films,” said Tombaugh, “and when we decided to redesign our tour of New England we approached Ken and Dayton for their input.    John Pond

UnderCoverDiners: Radisson Blu Great Restaurant

October 27, 2012 Leave a comment

Although Valentine’s Day has long passed, it’s celebration earlier this year was the reason we visited Radisson Blu Hotel’s Bistro Fax Restaurant.  Located on O’Connell Street in the heart of Sydney’s financial district, this boutique style hotel’s restaurant had, we were told, a lot to offer.

Don’t know if UnderCover Diners agree with the Restaurant’s name.  I am sure there are many younger readers out there who don’t know what a fax is.  On arrival we received a very warm welcome from a most affable hostess.  We were more than pleased with the special all-inclusive 5 course Valentine’s Day menu presented to us for the evening, which was accompanied by a bottle of French Pinot Noir Chardonnay Brut.

The total cost was $95 per person which also included a beautifully presented rose.  UnderCover Diners thought this was excellent value.  The live piano in the background gave atmosphere to this special evening.  Some of Bistro Fax’s diners were choosing from the regular menu and we must say, the food looked very appetizing.

Lunch and dinner specials offer a two course menu with a beverage for $35 per person.  Choose from the two selections in each category of starters, main and dessert with a choice of red or white wine, draft beer or soft drinks.  This will certainly not break the expense account.

Ambience, service and good tasty food are what we look for and we were not disappointed.

UnderCover Diners will definitely be returning to try their lunch.

Breakfast: 06:30 – 10:30 (Mon – Fri), 07:00 – 11:00 (Sat – Sun)

UnderCoverDiners: Marini Cafe Maroubra Beach

October 27, 2012 Leave a comment

MARINI CAFE MAROUBRA BEACH Right opposite the beach at Maroubra, on the corner of McKeon Street, Marini Cafe offers a large selection of coffee and meals that will delight. Their extensive All Day Breakfast Menu lists many favourites including eggs benedict served with your choice of ham or salmon. A popular choice is the Big Breakfast for $16.50 consisting of eggs, bacon, tomato, hashbrown, mushroom, baked beans, chipolata and toast. The servings leaving the kitchen were very generous and well presented.

The Chef/Owner, Shahid, originally from Bangladesh, has been cooking ever since arriving in Australia over ten years ago. For lunch I chose the Aussie Beef Burger, complete with beetroot, cheese, fried egg, lettuce, tomato and the best chunky chips I have had in a long time. My partner ordered a BLTA, bacon, lettuce, tomato and avocado on turkish bread, served with a generous helping of chips. We decided to share a dessert of thick fluffy pancakes, smothered with fresh bananas and berries, two large scoops of ice cream and maple syrup on the side. This large dessert could easily be shared by a family.   Kids are also well catered for with Baby Cinos at $1.00 plus a large selection of kid friendly food items. Marini Cafe is open from 7a.m. and the best news is that they will now be open for dinner until 10 p.m., from Wednesday to Sunday, featuring traditional Indian dishes priced under $20. BYO with no corkage. Bookings may be made on 9344 9908. Street parking with no metres, bus at the door. We will certainly be returning to Marini Cafe to try their new curry menu. Their friendly service added to our dining experience.  UD  - Undercover Diners.

UnderCover Diners: Balcone @ The Junction

October 27, 2012 Leave a comment

Our review is of the Balcone@TheJunction Restaurant on Level 1 of the Tea Gardens Hotel, the unassuming entrance belies what lies at the top of the stairs.  We were very pleasantly surprised at the decor and general ambience.  The restaurant was divided into three basic areas, a balcony eating area, a rear garden court with a roaring log fire and a most attractive indoor area that had a separate lounge area with oversized chairs and lounges. We decided to sit inside and our order was taken by our pleasant waitress.

As a starter we ordered salt & pepper calamari to share, the size was very generous, and although an entree portion, could have easily sufficed as a main meal.  For mains my partner ordered risotto with chicken, spinach and mushrooms.  I chose the 300g grain fed aged black angus scotch fillet from the large selection of steaks, served with a choice of creamy mashed potatoes, vegetables or chips.  There was a large selection of side dishes to compliment all the meals.  This restaurant has the largest selection of different types of steaks, all aged and grain fed.  For dessert we shared a lemon meringue pie with ice cream on the side.

All our servings were very generous and enjoyable.  My only complaint was that I thought the menu was too extensive, offering a huge selection of meals in many categories, allow an extra 5 minutes to read the menu.  There were steaks, pasta, pizza, salad, tapas, daily blackboard specials and much much more.  Lunch selections were from $14 that included a gourmet Black Angus hamburger with fries and mant topping. (I will be back to try that). Many of the mains were in the high twenties, but considering the quality and portion sizes I found this establishment great value for money.  The Undercover Diners.

New MegaShip for Royal Caribbean

October 27, 2012 Leave a comment

It has just been confirmed that Royal Caribbean will build a third ship in the “mega class cat.” this will be a sister ship to its two “Oasis-class” cruise vessel.

Currently the World’s two largest ships, Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas have been an excellent investment, hence Royal Carribean have decided to build a third in the class.

Passengers on these Oasis class ships are paying a premium to sail on them, with fares averaging up to twice the price than those readily available for similiar cruises.

These ships are a destination in themselves and it would be difficult for passengers to take advantage to all on offer in just one cruise.

I used to prefer smaller ships, but I must admit that mega ships offer so much in the way of entertainment and things to do.

Due to the ships size, we will not be seeing any of them in our part of the world and they will stick to sailing from their home port in Florida.  John Pond

Volunteers to make Cruise Visitors Welcome

October 24, 2012 Leave a comment

Tens of thousands of holidaymakers will be welcomed to Sydney by a fleet of friendly volunteer ambassadors during Sydney’s busiest ever cruise ship season between now and April 2013.

The City of Sydney’s welcoming committee, organised in partnership with Destination NSW, includes volunteers who set the benchmark for greeting international tourists during the Sydney Olympics and Paralympics.   The ambassadors will provide expert advice about the city’s highlights and ensure first impressions of  Sydney are memorable for the cruise ship visitors who inject around $1.1 billion into the local economy.

Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the tourism ambassador program was an essential part of the booming cruise ship season that will see a record 265 international and domestic ship visits Sydney between now and April.  “The cruise ship and tourism industry provides an important boost to our local economy. Our ambassadors ensure that when visitors arrive in Sydney, they are greeted by a friendly face and a depth of local knowledge so that they can get the most out of their visit.

Ann Sherry, CEO of Carnival Australia, welcomed the volunteers and said they will play an important role in greeting this year’s record 265 international and domestic cruise ship visits – up from 198 last season. If this growth continues, by 2020 nearly one million cruise passengers will be visiting Sydney each year.

“Volunteers save the country millions of work hours and billions of dollars. I’m glad to be part of that and gain tremendous satisfaction from it. And it’s good for the economy.”  After a trial last year, the successful program has now been made permanent and has expanded from the Overseas Passenger Terminal at Circular Quay to also include Barangaroo.

SEADREAM YACHT CLUB SPREADS THE GOOD OIL FOR AUSSIES

September 22, 2012 Leave a comment

SEADREAM Yacht Club is to add a unique culinary touch whenever Australian guests are aboard, it will make its own olive oil spread as an alternative to butter.  “We’ve had a lot of Australian guests mention that they prefer olive oil spread as a healthy alternative to butter or other spreads, but as it’s not widely available commercially in the regions in which we sail, our Executive Chef, Sudesh Kishore came up with the idea of our chefs making our own aboard whenever we have Australians sailing with us,” said SeaDream Yacht Club’s President, Bob Lepisto.

“And if it becomes popular with our other guests who are also conscious of the high fat content of butter and some other spreads, and which we think it may, we’ll look at providing it aboard all our sailings.

“We already have ‘Wellness Selections’ available on our menus that are lower in fats and carbohydrates, we have sugar-free options and we are the only company at sea offering optional “Raw Cuisine” that is a style of preparation in which all ingredients are raw, organic and vegan.

“So offering olive oil spread is simply an extension of our commitment to provide our guests with the dining they desire: if you want a big filet mignon followed by double chocolate mousse, by all means go ahead and order and enjoy it, but if you feel you should be good rather than naughty at the table one night, we’ve all the options to help you there too,” Mr Lepisto said.

For further information about SeaDream Yacht Club’s itineraries and onboard offerings on mega motor-cruiser yachts SeaDream I and SeaDream II in the Caribbean, Costa Rica, Mediterranean, the Black Sea and the Amazon.

John Pond: I have the pleasure of sailing on this fine Yacht (Sea Dream 1), where the complimentary Champagne and Caviar flow like water, Sea Dreams comment about Australians wanting healthier options to butter, should be taken on board, so to speak, by the mostly Americans on board who really need it.  America is the home of obesity.

Just a comment about Olive spread as a substitute to butter, I have been using this spread for years, it was invented in Italy and it is widely available in Europe and in thousands of major food store and all the major chains across America.  It is made by Fleischmanns one of the largest spread manufactures in the US and many other food companies. I suggest the Sea Dream chefs use Google to find some suppliers instead of spending a lot of time re-inventing the wheel.  Their on board gastronomic delights should take up all their time, not making spread.  This is a shipping line that prides itself on great food and it delivers on this promise.

Music Cruises Back to Back

September 17, 2012 Leave a comment

Johnny Welsh with Showgirls boarding last years Music Cruise

I am a bit excited, just received my confirmation from Cruiseco re my bookings on the Elvis and 70′s cruises in November.  Lets face it, I am an old rocker.

In my youth I was a cameraman on Bandstand and had the pleasure of meeting most of the Rock n Roll greats, from the US, UK and Australia.  Later as a Producer I had the pleasure of directing most of these greats. So I guess I have the music of the 60′s and 70′s in my blood.

I guess most of the passengers will be over 55, but if your younger, you will really enjoy the cruises, book these cruises to really enjoy some great music and entertainment, unfortunately they don’t write music like this anymore

I don’t think I have any blue suede shoes in my wardrobe, but if you still have flairs and wide collared shirts, dust them off and wear them onboard. On the last music cruise produced by Johnny Welsh, many of the passengers got dressed up in their finest 60′s+ gear, it made for a lot of fun.

Rhapsody of the Seas

The two music cruises are back to back, so why not book both.  They are exceptional value and I feel sure that a great deal of fun will be had by all.

The King tribute cruise featuring many “Elvis” tribute artists is sailing from Sydney 11th November 2012 returning 14th.

The 60′s and 70′s Music Cruise Departs Sydney 14th November, returning 18th.

If you want the best in Australian entertainment, or just want to get away from it all for a few days, then I suggest you consider one or both of these cruises. Visit their website for more information Music Cruises Australia or consult your Cruiseco travel agent.

The ship is Royal Caribbean’s Rhapsody of the Seas, one of my favourites and Music Cruises Australia will be producing all the incredible entertainment on board.

If you are a virgin cruiser, what a great opportunity to get away to sea for a few days on a wonderful ship, great food, entertainment and company, what more could any one want.

Cruising is the only way to vacation, it’s most economical and great value.  Passports are not necessary, valid photo ID, Drivers license are OK making it all very easy.

Looking forward to seeing you on board.  Don’t leave it too late and get a deal on both cruises.  John Pond

Brett Whiteley Travelling Art Scholarship Awards

September 13, 2012 Leave a comment

I attended the Brett Whiteley travelling art scholarship awards at the Whitley Studios and am pleased to report that the winner is Mitch Cairns, 28, from Balmain, Sydney, for his body of work, highlighted by One half of a woman’s waistline repeated 2012 and Poor Mum 2012.

This scholarship for young Australian painters is now in its 14th year. Ninety-five entries were received from around Australia and eleven were selected as finalists. A small selection of the finalists is on display at the Whiteley Studio, 2 Raper Street, Surry Hills, Sydney, until 25 November (except 24 September – 12 October). Mitch gave a very very short speech in which he thanked his mother and girlfriend but failed to thank any of the people responsible for the award.

Mitch Cairns won the Gruner Landscape Prize in 2003 and featured in the Salon de Refuses in 2004 whilst a student at the National Art School from which he graduated in 2006 with honours.

This year’s judges were artist Del Kathryn Barton and the Gallery’s head of Australian art, Wayne Tunnicliffe. Commenting on the work of Mitch Cairns, Del Kathryn Barton said Mitch’s curious, lyrical, figurative works are not only compelling visually, they reveal developed skill-sets vital to the mad adventure of making paintings! The sensitivity of surface, composition and of paint within these works reflect a disciplined and conceptually passionate practice.

This year the judges have also noted that Tom Polo, 27, from Smithfield, Sydney be Highly Commended

I finally got some pictures of the winner after another photographer took an inordinate amount of time taking his pictures. I asked him how long he would be and an elderly lady journalist (about my age) said “we’re from The Telegraph you know”.  I replied, “didn’t think they had any journalists left”.  Don’t think she got the joke, guess it really wasn’t funny.  Anyhow a visit to the Whitely Gallery is always worth the trip.  John Pond

Royal Caribbean Breaks Sales Records

Only launched last Sunday, Royal Caribbean International’s local Flagship Sale has already broken records as the busiest sales period in the history of the Australian office.

With three Royal Caribbean ships to be based in the region this summer season, Commercial Director Adam Armstrong (pictured)  is delighted with the response from the industry and passengers to the deals which include on-board credit and half-price deposits for all local sailings.

“Our phones have been ringing off the hook since the flagship sale was announced,” he said. “We know that some agents have been having trouble getting through to us due to the sheer volume of calls, so we have decided to extend the sale until Monday night to ensure we can assist everyone who would like to book with us for the coming season.”  The Royal Caribbean ships begin arriving in October and itineraries include the South Pacific, Australia and New Zealand.

“We’ve obviously had great interest in our megaliner, Voyager of the Seas,” continued Armstrong. “However, the Aussie favourites Rhapsody of the Seas andRadiance of the Seas have extremely strong bookings too. With Rhapsody of the Seas returning to the region after undergoing a massive refurbishment, passengers are excited to see the improvements made to the ship which is such a familiar sight to Australians.”  Voyager of the Seas arrives in Fremantle on her maiden voyage to Australia on November 5.  John Pond
